Epilogue

"Listen," Lorna said, walking down the hallway with Ford. "I'm really sorry for being a jerk this week."

"You weren't a jerk," Ford said, "you just had a bad week."

"You can say that again."

"You just had a bad week."

"Silly me," Lorna said. "And here I thought you were being sensitive and helpful."

"So we're still on for dinner at Skai Hai?" Ford asked, stopping in the doorway of the squad room.

"Yeah," Lorna said. "Am I picking you up?"

"Ford!" Captain Miller bellowed from his office. "Get in here."

"What'd you do this time?" Jake asked, walking past.

"Eh, I bumped his car with the Misery Machine," Ford said. "I left a note on his windshield because I knew he'd kill me if I told him myself."

"He'll kill you anyway," Jake said, sitting down.

Ford thought for a moment.

"I'll see you later?" he asked.

"Later," Lorna agreed.

Then, shoulders down, Ford walked into Miller's office. As he walked through the door, Ford realized the Captain wasn't alone.

"That'll be all," Miller said.

"Hey, Ford," Latasha said, turning around.

"You're back," Ford smiled. "How've you been?"

"Good," Latasha smiled. "Good. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a partner to retrain."

As she walked out of the office, Ford found the Captain smiling brightly at him.

"Jake!" Latasha hollered, causing Ford to wince. "Get your skinny ass up. We're mobile."

"Yes ma'am," Ford heard Jake squeak.

"Ford," Miller said.

"Listen, Captain," Ford said. "About your car..."

"Now that Detective Jones is back," Miller continued, then he realized that Ford had been talking. "What about my car?"

"Er, it's a great color. What color is that?"

"Kiwi," Miller said. "Now, as I said, Jones is back. That means you're without a partner."

"So it seems," Ford said, taking a seat without one being offered.

"It just so happens," Miller said, tapping a Newport out of the pack and lighting it. "It just so happens that we have another Detective without a partner. Now, I did the math, and one and one makes two. So you got a new partner."

"Great," Ford smiled. "So when do I get to work?"

"Work," Miller laughed. "That's a good one."

A knock at the door interrupted them, and they both looked.

"You wanted to see me, Captain?" Lambert asked, standing in the doorway.

Ford looked at Lambert, then back at Captain Miller, who was beaming like a kid at Christmas.
